What Sets the Karma Extended-Range Electric (EREV) Apart?

07.31.2026

Karma Automotive believes hybrids are the future. Hybrids stand as a healthy middle ground between internal combustion (ICE) and full battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) while playing off the benefits of both parties. As pioneers of Extended-Range Electric (EREV) technology, many wonder what makes our cars different from traditional hybrid offerings. Today, we’re going to answer just that.

What are the different types of hybrid vehicles?

There are four types of hybrid powertrains that dominate the modern market: parallel, series, plug-in, and mild hybrids. Parallel hybrids feature both gasoline and electric motors and can be driven by either option independently. Series hybrids, on the other hand, are electric vehicles assisted by an onboard gasoline-powered generator that extends the vehicle’s range and recharges the electric battery. Plug-in hybrids are a derivative of parallel hybrids, with the added option to recharge the vehicle’s battery via a plug-in charger. Lastly, mild hybrids are fully driven by a traditional gasoline motor, with the electric motor bolstering fuel efficiency and supporting the gas-powered motor.

The difference with EREVs

Our Extended-Range Electric vehicles (EREVs) qualify as series hybrids. It’s true that the term “hybrid” isn’t typically associated with excitement. Allow us to change your mind. With gasoline powering the generator and electricity driving the motors, Karma EREVs offer the freedom to recharge at a public charging station or refuel at a gas station, eliminating the need to sacrifice one for the other.

The generator always runs at peak RPMs to ensure maximum efficiency, while no transmission and less moving parts equate to less maintenance and more time doing what you love: driving. On that note, Karma EREVs offer the instant torque and performance of an electric vehicle with the visceral experience of an internal combustion engine when Sport Mode is engaged. Put the pedal down, and you’ll feel, hear, and smell an ICE vehicle, all while harnessing the lightning-quick power of a BEV. Who said progress needed to be boring?

Gyesera: Karma’s EREV Grand Coupe

Gyesera, our upcoming EREV-powered grand coupe, is our most potent yet. It’s the fastest of its kind: designed, engineered, and crafted in America, Gyesera offers up to 80 miles of pure electric range and up to 280 generator-assisted miles, adding up to a class-leading 360 miles of total range.

The car’s I-frame battery allows the design to sit lower, permitting a better center of gravity and a sports car’s persona; to that end, Gyesera’s weight distribution is an impressive 47/53, front to rear. Carbon fiber exterior panels and a driver-focused cockpit envelop you in a car that’s ready for your daily commute or a canyon-carving adventure.

Karma EREV: The best of both worlds

We’re honored to offer discerning buyers across the world the opportunity to experience truly uncompromised driving through our vehicles. Thanks to our revolutionary EREV technology, you no longer must settle for internal combustion or electric: the best of both worlds exists, and it’s made by Karma Automotive.
